Installation Guide
Preparation
Ensure the wall is clean, dry, and even before installation. For uneven walls, sizing or a wallpaper liner (potentially with a primer base) may be necessary—refer to the liner's instructions for specifics. Remove all previous wallpapers, fill holes, smooth out any irregularities, and take off electrical covers. For improved adherence and simpler removal, applying a wallpaper primer, such as Shieldz Universal Wallcovering Primer, is advised.

Pre-cut strips
First, determine the wall's height. Then, cut the wallpaper strip to match the wall's height, adding an extra 2 to 3 inches for trimming allowances. Also, factor in the desired placement of the pattern at the wall's top, which may influence the initial cut. Ensure subsequent strips are cut to the same length, taking into account the need to align the pattern repeat for a seamless look.
Starting point
Our standard rolls, is 30 inches. Initiate at the wall corner most distant from any entrance or primary view, subtract one inch from the wallpaper's width (for edge trimming), and mark this point with a pencil. Then, use a level to draw a vertical, straight line from your mark, serving as a guide to align the wallpaper's edge accurately.
Apply paste
Begin applying paste to your pre-cut strip by rolling it onto the center of the sheet, then spreading it outwards towards the edges. Ensure the paste covers the entire sheet evenly, both in length and width.
Book the wallpaper
"Book" the strip by folding the top and bottom edges into the middle (pasted side to pasted side), making sure the side edges line up properly. Then roll up the folded wallpaper like a newspaper to ensure that the edges do not curl out and dry prematurely. It should remain like this for 5-7 minutes to allow the paste to absorb and the paper to expand and relax back to its new normal. This will also keep the seams from opening up and drying out while the paper is relaxing.
First strip
Align the first strip with the plumb line (as mentioned in Step 4), ensuring there is an inch of excess material at the top, bottom, and side for trimming purposes.
Apply & Smooth
Employ a smoothing tool to carefully adhere the paper to the wall, starting from the top and center, then moving downwards and outwards.
Trim excess
Carefully trim the edges with a straightedge and craft knife. It's crucial to frequently change the blade to maintain a very sharp edge, reducing the chance of tearing the wallpaper.
Repeat the process
Ensure the wallpaper pattern aligns at eye level and that the seams meet closely without overlapping. Eliminate all air pockets. Use warm water and a sponge to clean off any paste residue from the wallpaper surface, then rinse again with clean warm water for a thorough clean.
Aligning patterns at eye level is crucial to compensate for any minor discrepancies or shifts at the wall's extremities. While hand-printed papers typically accommodate a 1/8'' mismatch, our products surpass this standard.
Frequently asked questions
What is non pasted wallpaper?
Non pasted wallpaper is a type of wallcovering that comes without a pre-applied adhesive. You must apply paste to either the wallpaper or the wall before hanging it.
Is non pasted wallpaper difficult to install?
Installing non pasted wallpaper can be more challenging than peel-and-stick varieties, requiring more precision and preparation, but it allows for stronger adhesion and a more durable finish.
Why is it essential to "book" wallpaper prior to its wall application?
"Booking" each wallpaper strip before wall application is crucial. This process involves folding the paper, adhesive side to adhesive side, and then softly rolling it without creasing. Let it rest for 5-7 minutes in this state.
The significance of booking lies in its ability to let the paper completely soak up the adhesive prior to application. This resting period allows the strip to expand to its ultimate dimensions, ensuring it hangs correctly without shrinking or showing seams after drying.
Why isn't my wallpaper aligning perfectly?
The quality of our wallpapers necessitates aligning them at eye level to ensure any minor pattern discrepancies are less noticeable, typically occurring at the top or bottom of the wall. Our hand screen-printed papers may present a pattern match tolerance of up to 1/8" at the seams. While we strive for greater precision, such a margin is to be expected with screen-printed designs.
Can I use non pasted wallpaper in bathrooms?
We suggest opting for our Peel and Stick wallpaper, which is splash-resistant and meant for installation in the bathroom.
How long can non pasted wallpaper typically last?
Given proper care, your non pasted wallpaper can remain vibrant and intact for over a decade.
How do I remove non pasted wallpaper?
Removal typically involves wetting the wallpaper to loosen the adhesive and then carefully scraping it off. The process can be more labor-intensive than removing peel and stick wallpaper.
Can non pasted wallpaper be repositioned after application?
Repositioning non pasted wallpaper is difficult once the paste has set. It's important to position it correctly the first time.
Can I apply non pasted wallpaper over existing wallpaper?
It's not recommended, as the adhesion may be compromised. Ideally, remove existing wallpaper and prepare the wall surface for best results.
